What Hogwarts Means to Me

Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home. // J.K. Rowling

What Hogwarts Means to Me

This is my 3rd year back to Hogwarts. See, like most of you, I didn’t get my letter until then. I didn’t get to experience the books as they came out one by one. I didn’t get to go to any movie premieres. As a child, I vaguely remember the Harry Potter fandom being born, but it didn’t mean anything to me.

At least not until three years ago when I finally decided to give the books a try. I loved reading as a kid, but I had gotten busy throughout college and books fell to the wayside. But I had started grad school, and I needed something to take my mind off of classes. So I purchased the e-book and could not stop reading.

I got through the whole series in about a month in a half. I cheered and laughed along with everyone. And when I got to the last book, I cried- not just because of all of the deaths, but because I was losing close friends. I didn’t want it to end!

So what does Hogwarts mean to me?

Hogwarts is a place where I can be myself; my imagination can run wild, and no one judges me there.  Hogwarts is a place where magic happens; not just wizardly magic, but the magic that happens inside your soul when you pick up that book. Hogwarts is a place where light conquers darkness. It’s a place that will always provide help if you need it. Hogwarts is a place where we’re all family.

So grab your best robes, your owl, and your wand. I’ll save you a seat on the Hogwarts Express!

I’d love to hear what Hogwarts means to you? What was your wizarding journey like?

The Everyday Geek: Her Universe Lip Glosses

“What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.” // Scott Westerfield, Uglies

I thought I would start up an on-going series called “The Everyday Geek.” The purpose of these posts would be how you could incorporate your geeky-ness, fandom, or pop-culture love into your everyday style in simple ways!

Today we’re going to talk about Her Universe‘s new lip gloss collections! If you’re not already familiar with Her Universe, the company was created by a role model of mine, Ashley Eckstein (the voice of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels’ Ahsoka Tano!). Her line has consisted mostly of geek fashion, but she has recently been putting out some amazing make-up products! I picked up her Star Wars and Infinity War lip glosses and decided to give them a try.

TEG_ HU Lip Gloss Review

The first set is the Infinity War lip glosses. This package comes with six glosses, all named after the various Infinity Stones. And, you guessed it, they’re all color-coordinated appropriately as well! All of these glosses have shimmer/glittler in them, but it’s subtle enough so you don’t look like a 3rd grader 😉 If you’re looking for something tame, you’re best off sticking with the pink, gold, and orange colors in this set. The green, blue, and purple colors can be worn super dark (which is TONS of fun) or lighter to create a playful look. I love wearing just one layer of the Power Stone (purple)!

Here are the three “tame” colors on me- Mind Stone (gold), Reality Stone (pink), and Soul Stone (orange). My favorite on me is definitely the Mind Stone from these three, but I know I’ll be using all three of these colors for every day!

Next are the more adventurous colors. The first set of photos is these layered on to make them darker. This is super fun, and I could totally see myself doing this for cosplay, Halloween, or a fun night out. It’s not something I would do for everyday, but maybe you would! The first is Power Stone (purple), then Space Stone (blue), and Time Stone (green).

I also used these darker colors in a more everyday way by only putting on one layer. I think this makes them more acceptable for work, but still adds the fun! They’re in the same order as the darker styles above- Power, Space, and Time.

Like I mentioned before, one of my favorite looks is the lighter style of the Power Stone! So fun!

Each of these glosses come in a cute tube with a gem style top, so you’ll never forget the power you hold in your hands! You can grab your own set of Infinity Stones, er, glosses from Her Universe or Hot Topic!

I also wanted to show you Ashley’s Star Wars lip glosses! Each of these are very unique and don’t really have the shimmer effect that the Infinity War glosses do. There are also only three tubes in this package. The first color is called Tatooine. It’s in the blue bottle, and it’s a very glossy/sparkly pink. It’s not too girly, though, and it’s perfect for day time wear! The next color is called Dagobah Dusk. It’s in the green bottle, and it’s a matte nude-pink. It’s a great color for every day as well, but you’ll definitely want to make sure you have a mirror available for application since the color is stronger than Tatooine. The last color is called Dark Side, and it’s in the red bottle. It’s a really dark wine color, and it’s gorgeous! However, the stain is a little hard to judge, and you’ll definitely want some liner for this one. You might want to also put on a base application of a light or nude color before applying this one. It is perfect for evening wear or if you’re feeling fierce!

Oh, and each of these bottles looks like a lightsaber! You’ll definitely be channeling your inner Jedi (or Sith Lord) when you wear these! You can grab your collection from Her Universe or Hot Topic.

Do you own any of these glosses? Which one is your favorite? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Study Tips for the Geekgirl

Study Tips for the Geekgirl

Back to school is breathing down our necks. Can you believe it? Where I’m from, some schools start in the middle of July! As a teacher, I don’t start until the beginning of August, but school mode has already started for me as I prep my classroom for the new year.

While you might still have a few more weeks (or months- lucky ducks!) until school starts, I wanted to share a few study tips I have for us geekgirls! And since a lot of us are taking summer classes, participating in Camp NaNoWriMo, or working, these tips can be super helpful for that as well!

  • Ambient Noises: One of my absolute FAVORITE things to do while working or studying is watching these ambient rooms from ASMR rooms on YouTube! If you’ve ever wanted the chance to study in the Hogwarts Library, now is your chance! I mean, just look at how gorgeous this is??? The best part is that these are about an hour long each, so put it on loop and snuggle up with a cup of butterbeer and your textbook! She’s also got other scenes from Harry Potter as well as Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings.
  • Snacks: Who doesn’t love snacks while studying right? But don’t settle for just any old snacks! Nerdy snacks are a must! One of my favorite people to follow for nerdy snacks is Jenn Fujikawa from JustJenn recipes. She makes the most adorable nerdy foods! Can we just talk about how stinking cute these wookiee cookies are??? And the blue milk!!! Luke Skywalker would be so proud.

  • Music: In case the ambient sounds of the Gryffindor Common Room won’t cut it for you, there are some great music options for studying! Definitely try to avoid music with words. The lyrics can be distracting, and your study session might turn into a dance off (we’re looking at you, Star-Lord). So to avoid that, try soundtracks! I loooove studying and working to any of the Star Wars soundtracks (Rogue One is one of my faves). Lord of the Rings is another awesome choice. And if you’ve put off studying until the last minute, any of the Marvel soundtracks (I especially enjoy the first Avengers) will have you feeling like a superhero in no time! Most of these music options can be found on streaming sites like Spotify or Amazon Music.

  • Comfy Clothes: While studying in cosplay might be the coolest thing ever, it’s probably not the most practical. Instead, pull on an oversized t-shirt (Target has some GREAT options in the men’s section) with your favorite superhero or fandom print. These shirts aren’t too expensive (about $13), so you can grab a few and always stay comfy! If your dorm room feels more like Hoth (I had one that was like that!), nerdy sweatshirts are always great options! Check out sites like Etsy and Jane.com for adorable sweaters that won’t break the bank.

Study Tips for the Geekgirl

There we have it- a few short and sweet study tips that are perfect for the geekgirl! Do you have any others you would add to this list? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Boho Geek Chic: Rope & Rose

Decorating a home is such a personal experience, and it is almost like a work of art in itself! A person’s home says a lot about them- their likes, their dislikes, their family structure, their tastes, etc. One of the biggest trends in home décor right now is the boho look!

That’s where Rope & Rose comes in! I was in awe with how beautiful her pieces were. They give off that cozy boho vibe that works in so many different décor trends! And one of my favorite things about this company is that it’s not just “another” business, but Brittney is a real human who has passions (for her family, macramé, and fandoms!).

All the heart eyes here!

And who better to tell you about their amazing business than the lady who runs it?!

Me: Hey girl! Thanks so much for joining us! I’m really excited to hear all about your business, and what makes it tick! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself first?

Brittney: Well, currently I’m a Stay At Home mom to a crazy little 2 year old girl, and I make modern macramé as a side hustle. If you want my resume summary, I have a background in Graphic Design and Visual Communications and I used to work as a Wedding Venue Coordinator before I got pregnant. I used to be a Starbucks Barista and the word “Frappuccino happy hour” still makes me cringe. I consider myself a foodie and plan all my trips around places to eat. I enjoy long strolls through Target and my next small goal in life is to buy a summer jumpsuit.

Me: I can totally relate with Target! You mentioned that your side hustle is modern macramé. What made you decide to start doing that?

Brittney: My little sister is getting married this July, and she lives in Hawaii so she’s really into everything boho. She sent me a picture of a macramé wedding backdrop and was like “Hey, make this for me” and I was like “uh…. ok?”. And after hours of learning the basic knots of macramé I finally made my first macramé creation! It was a little chair back décor thing… I’m pretty sure I didn’t even keep it, but I remember being so proud of it and thinking it was so beautiful. Soon I got ADDICTED and made so many wall hangings that I filled my dining room and my husband said “Ok, we gotta get rid of these because we’re moving soon”. So I decided to try to sell them on Instagram to my friends. Soon people started asking me to do special orders and before I knew it, I had my own little business.

Me: I love that! It really seems like you have a true passion for what you do! What is your favorite part of having this business now?

Brittney: I really love it when I finish a piece I can stand back and look at it, and it gives me this feeling of peace and accomplishment that I’ve never experienced. It’s this indescribable feeling of “Oh my goodness, this is beautiful and even if no one in the world agrees with me, it’s still beautiful”. And as a creative, that feeling is priceless. It’s the driving force of an artist. Have you ever experienced that? A confidence so strong that its not dependent on the thoughts of others? If you never have, you need to… at least once in your life. It’s so freeing.

Me: This just gives me the warm fuzzies! I’ve experienced that to some extent, and you’re right- it really is so freeing! It seems like this is just the baby stage right now. Where do you hope this business takes you in the future?

Brittney: I would DIE if I could work with flowers more. I want to start doing events where I style parties or events. Or expand the “Rose” part of Rope & Rose and have a flower crown booth. Maybe to even be featured in weddings?!?! OMG I need to stop, I’m getting excited just thinking about it. lol! Or I would love to open a coffee shop/ art studio/ floral studio where I teach art classes and make coffee. Sorry, I dream pretty big. Haha!

Me: Hey! Big dreams are what make the world go round! I love these big dreams you have! Now, since we’re a geeky blog, we all are dying to know- what’s your favorite fandom right now?

Brittney: Currently? My last obsession was the ACOTAR series by Sarah J Mass. I’m a sucker for fairytale retellings. She did such an amazing job at world-building and character development. I actually decided to read her books because of the fan art on Pinterest and DeviantArt! Her characters are beautiful and have so much depth. And they’re very relatable. My sister and I could spend hours discussing the books and sending memes to each other. And the ACOTAR memes are so freaking funny! I seriously laugh so hard I cry sometimes… Don’t tell anyone. lol 😉 When I was younger (and had more free time) I was into manga and anime. You know those people who sat on the floor at Barnes & Noble and read manga? That was me. So my recent Anime obsession is Food Wars… if you don’t watch anime regularly I’m not sure if I recommend it for you, to be completely honest. It can be vulgar at times, but in Japan it’s a type of humor and it doesn’t bother me. It’s a special kind of humor and it’s ridiculous and hilarious at the same time. My husband and sister think I’m insane but I like it!

Me: Love it! That definitely makes life so much more fun! My family thinks I’m crazy the same way, so I feel you! You’re definitely a fangirl, so how do you incorporate that love into your business?

Brittney: I named a couple of my wall hangings after the terms and characters in some of my fave fandoms. Like I named a piece “The Eye” once because it looked like the Eye of Saur on from LOTR… and I recently named a piece Darth because I used black rope. Yes, like Darth Vader. Hahaha! It’s me exploring my dark side. My next book-inspired piece is a piece inspired by Rhysand or Feyre of ACOMAF. I want it to be a dark midnight blue or black and to look like wings! I just need to find the perfect blue.

Me: I’ve been eyeing that Darth hanging! It’s so fun- and gorgeous! You didn’t mention it, but I know you’re a Potterhead! So, we need to know all your stats!

Brittney: Hufflepuff Hogwarts house (Team Cedric FOREVER). Pukwudgie Ilvermorny house. Dolphin patronus. Wand made of Alder wood with a Phoenix feather core 12 ½” and slightly springy flexibility. And I prefer my butterbeer frozen.

Me: Puff Pride! Yah! Well, one last thing before you go. What would you tell people who want to start their own business?

Brittney: People don’t buy products. The buy brands… they buy dreams, goals, ideas, and the lifestyle you’re selling. It doesn’t make sense to a lot of people, but it’s true. As an example, I sell macramé home décor. But people don’t just buy a macramé wall hanging, they’re buying the boho vibes they get when they walk into their room and see my wall hanging. They buy the feeling of comfort that comes from a room filled with things they love. They buy the idea that having this in their home will transform into something they can call THEIRS. I could talk for days about it, but in a nutshell, your products and business will send a message to people. Make sure whatever that message is, that it’s something you’re proud of and that you can stand by it even if no one else is standing by you.

Me: Awwww thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions! I love your business, and wish you all the luck in the world!

You can follow Rope & Rose on Insta at @ropeandrose (she’s most active there!) But she also has a Facebook page by the same name. Make sure to also check out her Etsy shop RopeandRose to see her products and upcoming classes if you’re in her area! (Yes- Brittney can TEACH you how to make adorable macramé!). She also does custom orders, so if there’s something you’re looking for, make sure to look her up! She loves to chat through DMs too!

A Letter to the Geek Girl

Dearest Geek Girl,

I get it. Being a geek girl can be hard. I heard those kids on the playground say “but that’s for boys” when you told them you watched Star Wars the night before. I heard the snickers as you pretended your pencil was a wand in science class. I saw the eyebrows raised as you unpacked the dozens of books for your dorm bookshelf. I heard your coworker say “I don’t get it” when you wore that awesome cosplay to the work Halloween party. I get it. Because I’ve been there.

It can be hard to be a geek girl. But it’s also the greatest thing ever! You have a passion. You have imagination. That’s more than most people ever get. You’ve seen the ones without it- walking around with their heads down. Going through life like a machine.

Not you. You’re like a splash of color on a drab background. You stand out. You make the world exciting. Embrace it. You’re like a unicorn in a world of horses.

So buy that new book. Wait in line at the bookstore for the midnight release. Dress up to see the new Star Wars movie. Build that cosplay you’ve always wanted to make. Get the Harry Potter inspired dishes for your house. Get tickets for the con you’ve always wanted to go to. Scour Etsy for the perfect fandom jewelry. Embrace the geek girl. That’s who you are.

Don’t try to be like everyone else. Because that’s boring. You are you. And you are a geek girl.

Self Care the Geeky Way

What are some of your favorite ways to relax? I’m at teacher, so honestly, at the end of the day I don’t usually want to be hanging out with people. Give me Netflix, Prime Video, or a good book instead, and I’ll be a happy camper.

I also love to pamper myself! Face masks, lip scrubs, bubble baths- I’m a sucker for all of them. So when Ashley started up Fairytale Bath Company, I was so excited! Because not only does she make beautiful and unique bath and body products, but she also makes them NERDY!

The first item that I saw of Ashley’s was this cauldron bath bomb. As a huge Potterhead, I knew I needed one of these in my life. I mean, it was like swimming in Potions class! (And absolutely no stress from Professor Snape!). They smell amazing, have glitter, AND can be used more than once! Plus the cauldron is leftover, so you can use that for brewing your own batch of Felix Felicis when you’re finished.

She also makes a lip scrub that is to die for. It’s a HUGE container (I’ve barely made a dent in mine), so it will last you a long time! She’s got tons of flavors like Black Forest (personal fave), Smackerel of Honey, and Goblin Fruit. And your lips will feel divine after you use this!

For the traditionalist, Ashley also stocks some regular bath bombs. And they are so gorgeous and vibrant! I seriously have never seen bath bombs as bright as these! She has some awesome Harry Potter themed ones, as well as some Hunger Games inspired ones! I mean, I know we’ve all wanted to live it up like the Capitol! These bath bombs will definitely help you on your way.

If bubble baths are more your thing, Fairytale Bath Co. has got you covered! These house pride bubble scoops like just like ice cream scoops (super cute), but make your bath feel just like the prefect’s bath! All you need is a golden egg (and Moaning Myrtle!).

If you happen to be a Death Eater (we won’t judge), you might feel more at home with this Dark Arts bath bomb. After all, working for He Who Must Not Be Named can be exhausting.

There are a TON of other goodies that I don’t have time or space to talk about, but I wanted to show my favorite part last! Ashley also has a subscription box! This box is only $25 (and yes, that includes shipping!), and you’ll get on average 3-5 bath and body items each month. That’s a self-care day each week! The other great thing, is these items are made especially for the box. Each box has a theme, and the theme for January 2018 was Another Galaxy. All items were inspired by some of our favorite science fiction series like The Martian, Star Wars, Illuminae, and more!

BTW, Ashley did not pay me at all to write this review of her amazing shop! I just had to feature it because it’s seriously awesome!

*All photos except for the last one are from Fairytale Bath Company’s website.
